What Does a Lutron RadioRA 3 System Actually Cost? | Electrician Kingston
What does a Lutron RadioRA 3 system actually cost?
Lutron does not publish retail prices. The hardware is only available through trained installers, and pricing depends on the system specification, the number of devices, and the complexity of programming. That makes it difficult to get a sense of cost before you speak to someone.
This guide gives realistic UK price ranges based on typical project sizes, so you can budget sensibly before getting in touch. These are indicative figures, not fixed quotes, and they cover hardware, installation, and programming as a complete package.
What you are paying for
A Lutron RadioRA 3 quote is not just hardware. There are four elements that make up the total cost.
Hardware includes the processor, Sunnata keypads and dimmers, Pico wireless remotes, and any Lumaris tape light or Triathlon shading you add. The processor is the core of the system and is required regardless of project size. Keypads and dimmers are priced per unit, and Lumaris tape light is priced per length with a wireless controller for each run.
Installation covers mounting every device, connecting the processor to your home network, and any first fix wiring if you are in a new build. For retrofit projects using RadioRA 3’s wireless devices, installation is relatively quick because there is no rewiring. Wireless dimmers replace existing switches in the back box or mount in the ceiling void.
Programming is where much of the value sits. This is the work that turns a collection of dimmers and keypads into a system that actually changes how you live in your home. Scene creation, schedule setup, keypad button assignment, dimming level fine tuning, and automation rules are all configured in Lutron Designer software and then tested on site with you.
Commissioning and handover covers final testing, walking you through the keypads and app, setting up your phone, and making sure everyone in the household is comfortable using the system. This is not a line item you will see on a quote, but it is time the installer spends and it is part of the cost.
Indicative price ranges
These figures cover the full package: hardware, installation, programming, and commissioning. They are based on typical residential projects in the Kingston, Richmond, and Surrey area.
Single room
A kitchen or living room with four to six dimming zones, one or two Sunnata keypads, and app control via the Lutron processor.
Typical range: £1,500 to £3,000
This is the most common starting point. The kitchen is usually the first room homeowners want to control because it has the most lighting circuits and the biggest impact on daily life. A single keypad by the door with four scenes (cooking, dining, evening, off) transforms how the room works.
Multi room
Three to four rooms (for example kitchen, living room, master bedroom, and hallway) with 15 to 25 devices, multiple keypads, and full scene programming across all spaces.
Typical range: £4,000 to £8,000
At this scale, the system starts to feel like a whole home experience. Scenes can span rooms. A “goodnight” button in the master bedroom turns off everything downstairs. A “welcome home” scene lights the hallway and kitchen as you walk in.
Whole home
Every room controlled, Lumaris tape light in key areas (kitchen coves, shelving, media room), Triathlon shading in two to three rooms, and comprehensive scene programming.
Typical range: £10,000 to £20,000+
This is where RadioRA 3 comes into its own. With up to 200 devices per processor (or 400 across two paired processors), the system handles a large home comfortably. The cost depends heavily on how many rooms include tape light and shading, and how complex the automation requirements are.
HomeWorks QSX
Lutron’s flagship processor based system for new builds and major renovations, with Alisse or Palladiom keypads, third party integration (AV, HVAC, security), and whole home automation.
Typical range: £15,000 to £40,000+
HomeWorks is a different category. The hardware is more expensive, the keypads are premium (Alisse starts significantly higher than Sunnata), and the programming is more involved because of third party integration. This is for clients who want everything under one roof and are building or renovating at a scale where that makes sense.
What moves the price up or down
Several factors affect where your project falls within these ranges.
Number of controlled circuits. Each dimming zone needs a device. A room with two circuits (downlights plus pendants) needs fewer devices than a room with six (downlights, pendants, wall lights, cove tape, under cabinet tape, and a table lamp).
Keypad specification. Sunnata keypads for RadioRA 3 are well priced for what they offer. If you move to HomeWorks for the Alisse or Palladiom ranges, the per keypad cost increases significantly, but the build quality and finish options are exceptional.
Lumaris tape light. Adding tunable white tape light (1,800K to 4,000K) to coves, shelving, or under cabinets increases the cost per room. Each run needs a wireless controller, and the tape itself is priced per metre. The result is beautiful, but it is an addition to budget for.
Triathlon shading. Motorised roller shades with battery powered operation and direct RadioRA 3 integration. Each shade is a meaningful addition to the cost, but the convenience of including blinds in your lighting scenes (and never manually adjusting them again) is significant.
Retrofit vs new build. Retrofit projects using wireless devices are straightforward but may need additional repeaters in larger homes to maintain range. New builds may need first fix wiring to the processor location. Neither adds dramatically to cost, but both are worth noting.
Programming complexity. A simple setup with four scenes per room is quicker to programme than a system with conditional logic, time based automations, geofencing, and integration with third party platforms. More complexity means more programming time.
Is it worth it?
This is the question behind the question. You are not just paying for dimmers and keypads. You are paying for a system that changes how your home feels every morning and every evening, for years.
A Lutron system dims smoothly and silently. It does not flicker at low levels. It does not drop out when your Wi-Fi has a bad day. The keypads are solid, beautifully made, and work every single time you press them. The scenes you set up in the first week become part of how your household lives, and they still work perfectly a decade later.
For comparison, a set of smart bulbs across a whole house might cost £500 to £1,000 in hardware, but the experience is fundamentally different. Smart bulbs rely on Wi-Fi, dim using PWM (which can flicker), require an app for everything, and tend to be discontinued within a few years. A Lutron system is in a different category of reliability and longevity.
There is also a resale consideration. Lutron is a globally recognised brand. A well installed system adds perceived value to a property in a way that is immediately understood by estate agents and buyers.
