Lutron vs Rako: which lighting control system is right for your home?

If you are considering professional lighting control for your home, you have probably come across two names more than any others: Lutron and Rako. Both are excellent systems used in high end homes across the UK. Both offer physical keypads, app control, scene programming, and motorised blind integration. And both use dedicated wireless protocols rather than relying on your home Wi-Fi, which is what separates them from consumer smart bulbs.

So which one should you choose? The honest answer is that it depends on your home, your project, and what matters most to you. Here is how they compare.

What Lutron and Rako have in common

Before getting into the differences, it is worth understanding the shared ground. Both systems offer wireless retrofit options that can be installed without rewiring your home. Both use dedicated RF communication (Lutron uses Clear Connect, Rako uses 868 MHz RF) that operates independently of your Wi-Fi network. Both have physical keypads in multiple finishes, dedicated apps for iOS and Android, voice assistant integration with Alexa, Google, and Apple HomeKit, and the ability to programme scenes and schedules. Both require professional installation and programming.

If you are upgrading from smart bulbs or basic smart switches, either system is a significant step up in reliability, dimming quality, and daily usability.

Where Lutron stands out

Lutron invented the solid state dimmer in 1961 and has led the lighting control industry globally ever since. Their flagship residential system, RadioRA 3, is widely regarded as the most reliable wireless lighting control available.

Clear Connect wireless technology is the foundation. It operates on a dedicated frequency with no interference from Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or neighbouring networks. Type X devices mesh with each other, creating a robust network that strengthens as you add more devices.

Lumaris intelligent lighting is a standout feature. Lutron manufactures their own tunable white tape light (1,800K to 4,000K) and downlights that are native to RadioRA 3. There is no compatibility guesswork, no third party drivers, and dimming is flicker free down to 0.1%. If you want tape light in coves, under cabinets, or along shelving, Lumaris is hard to beat.

HomeWorks QSX gives Lutron a clear upgrade path. If you start with RadioRA 3 and later want whole home automation that integrates HVAC, AV, security, and gate control under a single processor, Lutron offers that within the same ecosystem. No other dedicated lighting control manufacturer has an equivalent tier.

Integration breadth is another strength. RadioRA 3 works with Control4, Savant, Crestron, Sonos, URC, RTI, and others. If you are building a wider smart home system around a third party platform, Lutron is almost always the first lighting control system on the compatibility list.

Brand recognition also matters. Lutron is a globally recognised name. For homeowners who may sell their property in future, a Lutron system adds perceived value in a way that is immediately understood.

Where Rako stands out

Rako is a UK manufacturer based in Rochester, Kent. Their systems have won Best Lighting Control at the Smart Building Awards five years running. What makes Rako distinctive is the combination of flexibility, build quality, and value.

UK designed and manufactured means support, training, and stock are all UK based. There are no transatlantic supply chain delays, and the company is accessible and responsive. For installers and homeowners alike, that matters.

The RAK8 modular dimmer rack is where Rako’s wired system shines. The RAK8 uses interchangeable plug in modules for trailing edge, leading edge, mains switching, DALI, and curtain motor control. All memory is stored on the motherboard, so a module can be swapped without reprogramming the system. RAK8 units stack up to 32 channels on a wired system. For new builds and major renovations, this centralised approach is clean, flexible, and easy to maintain.

Wired and wireless on the same system is a practical advantage. In a renovation where some rooms are back to brick and others are untouched, Rako lets you run wired control in the new spaces and wireless retrofit in the existing ones. Everything sits on the same system and is programmed together.

Price point is typically lower for equivalent functionality. Rako hardware tends to cost less than Lutron for a comparable setup, and the free training programme (Foundation and Advanced courses at Rako’s UK headquarters) reduces installer overheads, which can translate into savings for the homeowner.

EOS keypads are popular with interior designers. The screwless all metal fascia comes in seven hand finished options including matt bronze, antique brass, and polished brass, with six configurable buttons and custom engraving via Rako’s Plate Designer.

Which system should you choose?

Here is a practical guide based on project type.

Retrofit, single room or a few rooms, budget matters most. Rako wireless. You can start with one room and expand over time. The wireless dimmers mount in the ceiling void or replace existing dimmers in the back box, so there is no disruption to the room.

Retrofit, whole home, premium feel, integrated tape light. Lutron RadioRA 3. Clear Connect is exceptionally reliable across a whole house, and Lumaris tape light is the cleanest way to add accent lighting without compatibility concerns.

New build, wired system, flexibility on load types. Rako wired. The RAK8 modular racks handle trailing edge, leading edge, DALI, switching, and motor control from a single stack. Centralised dimming keeps the installation clean.

New build, whole home automation, third party integration. Lutron HomeWorks QSX. If you want lighting, shading, HVAC, AV, and security under one platform with premium Alisse or Palladiom keypads, HomeWorks is the system.

Renovation with a mix of new and existing rooms. Rako wired plus wireless hybrid. Wired in the new spaces, wireless in the existing ones, all on the same system.
